Captive-Bred Indigo Snakes & Cribos
Darker Scales offers responsibly bred snakes from the genus Drymarchon - including the Indigo Snakes and the Cribos. Drymarchon are often considered the pinnacle of colubrids, and some even think of them as the peak of captive nonvenomous snakes in general. The Indigo Snakes and Cribos are large, heavy-bodied, active snakes known for their intelligence and gentle confidence. These animals require more enrichment and maintenance than most other snakes in captivity, and truly require dedicated and committed keepers. Here at Darker Scales our snakes are kept in large, species-appropriate enclosures with a focus on quality over quantity. Each of our offspring are produced with health in mind first - for the parents and offspring. Every hatchling is lovingly cared for and socialized before moving on to their forever home.
Our Drymarchon Species
The Snakes at Darker Scales
Eastern Indigo Snakes
Eastern indigo snakes (Drymarchon couperi) are the most well-known Drymarchon species - and for good reason. These stunningly beautiful animals are what most people think of when they hear 'indigo snake.' Eastern indigo snakes are solid black bodied and usually feature a red chin, though some individuals have black or cream-colored chins. Eastern indigo snakes are listed as a federally protected species and require a permit to sell across state lines. Some states also require a state-level permit to own one of these remarkable creatures. These restrictions are well worth the headache - these snakes truly live up to their reputation.Fully grown males are between 7-8ft long, while females are slightly smaller and normally max out around 6ft long.
Blacktail Cribos
Blacktail Cribos (Drymarchon melanurus melanurus) are large, gold-bodied colubrids with black or dark brown tails. Blacktail cribos vary in appearance - some are very mottled while others are more 'clean' and feature little to no dark mottling on their bodies. While both the mottled and cleaner looks are beautiful, we focus on breeding for individuals with the cleanest looks and darkest tails. These snakes have a powerful presence with their confident and bold personalities, but are true gentle giants when properly socialized and cared for.Fully grown males are between 7-9ft-long, while females are smaller and normally max out around 6-7ft long.
Texas Indigo Snakes
Texas Indigo Snakes (Drymarchon melanurus erebennus) are possibly the most varied in appearance of all Drymarchon species. Texas indigo snakes have a black or dark brown base with varied degrees of mottling/banding. Their chins vary in color from creams, to browns, to oranges, and even reds. Our group here at Darker Scales features a wide variety of these color expressions. Texas indigos do not require any permits or special licensing outside of some specific state-level restrictions in the state of Texas itself. Texas indigos are often seen as the 'next best thing' if obtaining a permit for an Eastern indigo is not of interest.Fully grown males are between 6-8ft-long, while females are smaller and normally max out around 6ft long.
Guerrero-locality Mexican Indigo Snakes
The Mexican Indigo snake (Drymarchon melanurus rubidus) has different localities that impact their size and coloration. At Darker Scales, we focus on the Guerrero locality. These Guerrero locality Mexican indigo snakes are substantially smaller than other Mexican indigo snakes and feature a wide array of vibrant contrasting colors. Guerrero locality Mexican indigo snakes generally have black bodies with varying amounts of mottling and colorful bellies which range in color from creams to oranges to reds. If you are looking to add a Drymarchon to your collection but are hesitant because of their size - look no further than this locality of Mexican indigo snake.Fully grown males of this locality are only around 5ft long, while females are smaller and normally max out around 4-5ft long.

Welcome to Darker Scales!
Founded in 2024 by Kay.
Located in the Hudson Valley area in New York, US.
Kay has had a lifelong fascination with snakes - especially the legendary Eastern Indigo. In 2023 Kay purchased Chaos - the one who started it all. Chaos showed us that sometimes it is okay to meet your heroes, and the rest is history. We now have four Drymarchon species and have successfully bred three of them.At Darker Scales we focus on wellfare and quality of life over all else. Kay believes that species-appropriate enclosures with plenty of enrichment opportunities are a requirement for these snakes, and takes no shortcuts with care. Because these snakes get so large, we do not have a large number of snakes on site and instead focus on quality of care.
